Alcohol

Relevant Regulations

Amendment

The Home Is an alcohol-free zone; alcohol should not be brought or kept on the premises and children should not normally be taken into licensed premises, unless it is part of a clear plan leading toward independence or on a special occasion; e.g. Christmas. In any case, children will not be allowed to purchase or consume alcohol.

Adults are not permitted to consume alcohol whilst on duty and should not arrive at work under the influence of alcohol.

In the event that a member of adults turns up for duty under the influence of alcohol, they will be advised to leave work and return home.  Their suitability to their post would also be seriously re-considered and the use of the Disciplinary Procedures (to follow) will be initiated.

Adults must not assist or promote the purchase of alcohol by children and young people. This would also be classed as gross misconduct under the disciplinary policy and immediate dismissal would follow.

The importance of adults as role models is integral to their caring duties, and they must display at all times a responsible attitude towards drinking.

Adults should ensure that children/young people are educated about alcohol and its effects.

If adults are concerned that a child/young person has been drinking alcohol, this should be raised with the Home's manager and the child's social worker as required.

Adults should also ensure that a record of the incident is taken and added to the necessary documentation on Clearcare.

Where it becomes evident, or it is suspected, that a child or young person has been drinking alcohol, the most appropriate response will vary dependent on how much the young person has had to drink or how it has affected them. These options are outlined below:

  • Offering fluids - water, squash;
  • Periodic monitoring and checks by adults - 10 minutes, 30 minutes, hourly, etc;
  • Contacting health professionals for advice e.g. G.P.;
  • Hospitalisation for day patient or overnight stay if appropriate, etc.

Mandatory training is completed by employees during their induction process. Additional training can be sourced if it is felt necessary due to behaviours exhibited by children or young people.
